Helderburg, the Arkansas, USA-based automotive engineering firm that is creating updated versions of the classic Land Rover Defender, has developed a High Performance Braking System. The company says that this proprietary system marks “a significant leap” in stopping power and engineering sophistication compared to the original specification, and is designed to complement Helderburg’s new generation of high-torque turbo diesel engines.
The uprated system is necessary as the Helderburg Defenders have fast acceleration, meaning they require improved control hardware. The new braking system resulted from a collaboration in England between Helderburg partner William Lines and two former Rolls-Royce engineers who are experienced in aerospace-grade materials science.
The Helderburg High Performance Braking System was developed using the proprietary Helderburg Calibration Matrix, which brings together friction modelling, thermal load balancing, and hydraulic mapping. According to the company, in real-world testing a fully equipped Helderburg Defender on 35 inch tyres demonstrated up to a 26% reduction in stopping distance from 60 mph, compared with the previous system.
There are four key technical advancements in the new braking system:
- A cross drilled and precision slotted geometry, engineered to extract heat, vent gases, and renew pad contact for superior performance in wet weather and under heavy loads.
- Cerakote thermal reinforcement. Every brake rotor is finished with a ceramic-reinforced coating for corrosion control and thermal tolerance, bringing aerospace protection to the classic Defender chassis.
- An advanced caliper architecture. The enlarged, rigid caliper body features a 24% increase in piston surface area and a 19% increase in clamping force compared with the previous system, utilising stainless steel construction and high-temperature seals to eliminate flex.
- A completely redesigned master cylinder with a larger internal bore and expanded fluid capacity provides refined modulation and reduced pedal travel.
“In an era where counterfeit builds have entered the market, this braking system serves as a definitive hallmark of a genuine Helderburg commission,” said Paul Potratz, founder & CEO of Helderburg. “Each system features serialised calipers tied to the Helderburg registry, and proprietary components that are unavailable for outside purchase.”
