ZF has developed a perception-sensor-based system to enhance the safety and efficiency of urban bus operations through functions such as automated steering assistance and coordinated kneeling at bus stops.
The system is based on the intelligent interaction of driver assistance systems, chassis technologies and software. One function is City Bus Assist, currently in the proof-of-concept stage, which supports drivers during bus stop approaches through automated steering assistance and integrated kneeling control.
The system helps guide the vehicle precisely to the kerb while minimising lateral tire scrub. Integrated suspension control optimises kneeling to reduce the vertical entry gap for barrier-free passenger boarding.
Another function is City Bus CMS (collision mitigation system). This safety system has been specifically developed for the requirements of city buses, and can actively detect vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians and initiate braking if necessary to mitigate or avoid collisions. The system is a derivative of ZF’s ADAS technologies, including the OnGuardMAX platform. City Bus CMS is already in use today by various bus OEMs.

The system also incorporates CDC Skyhook, a software-based damping algorithm that continuously adapts damper performance in real time. It stabilises vehicle movements, enhancing ride comfort for passengers and improving overall vehicle dynamics.
The final element is E-comp Scroll, a low-noise, oil-free electric air compressor that supports braking and suspension systems. Its reduced noise and vibration improves comfort, especially in electric buses, while lowering maintenance requirements.
ZF will be showing the technologies at IAA Transportation 2026 in Hanover, Germany on 14–20 September (Hall 21, Booth B42).
