Hyundai Motor Group has appointed Junghyun Kwon as executive vice president and head of its Autonomous Driving Development Center, as the company works to strengthen its capabilities in autonomous driving technologies.
Kwon will report to Minwoo Park, president and head of the Advanced Vehicle Platform (AVP) Division. Hyundai says the appointment is intended to strengthen autonomous driving as a core pillar of its future mobility strategy.
Drawing on his background in autonomous vehicle perception software, deep learning, machine learning and computer vision, Kwon will lead the Hyundai Motor Group’s autonomous driving technology development, from initial concept through to product commercialisation. According to Hyundai, the move forms part of its wider Physical AI vision for autonomous mobility.
Kwon has previously worked at several global technology companies. He oversaw autonomous driving software development and commercialisation at NVIDIA, and most recently led the development of intelligent robots at Samsung Electronics.
The appointment follows a broader push by Hyundai to recruit senior talent in software-defined vehicles (SDVs) and autonomous driving. In July, the Group appointed Dongwuk Kim as a senior vice president, to head up its SDV Platform Development Center.
Dongwuk Kim previously led the development of wireless communication systems for mobile devices, vehicles and humanoid robotics at companies including Apple and Tesla. His role will focus on advancing Hyundai’s software-defined vehicle platform.
Hyundai has also appointed Jeremy Ma as a senior vice president and head of AVP Silicon Valley. Ma brings experience in robotics and autonomous driving software development and commercialisation from Apple, Toyota Research Institute, and NVIDIA.
