Inertial measurement technology

Racelogic's IMU05-S delivers 0.02° pitch and roll, <0.1° heading, and stability of 0.8°/hr

VBOX Automotive has achieved a new benchmark in inertial measurement with the release of its new IMU05 technology. Addressing the demands of an ever-evolving industry, this inertial measurement unit (IMU) is not simply an iteration of previous technology, but rather a definitive leap that embodies the culmination of years of expertise and the best in modern inertial sensor technology.

Taking advantage of this cutting-edge inertial technology, the IMU05 maintains ease of use and a compact size while providing a pitch and roll accuracy of 0.03°, 0.15° for heading, and a stability of 1.2°/hr.

For those requiring even finer accuracy, the IMU05-S is an advanced variant featuring a more precise sensor. This unit delivers an accuracy of 0.02° for pitch and roll, <0.1° for heading, and a stability of 0.8°/hr.

Julian Thomas, Racelogic’s owner and managing director, explains what makes the new IMUs stand out in the market: “This new IMU represents a significant leap in accuracy for our inertial solutions, further expanding the range of applications for our technology. Technology is advancing rapidly, and we have worked tirelessly to extract the best possible performance from these cutting-edge sensors. In fact, the precision of this new sensor is so remarkable that it can even detect the subtle rotation of the Earth, showcasing its extraordinary capabilities.”

When you factor in the price point, the value proposition becomes even clearer. The IMU05, despite its enhanced capabilities, is priced in line with its predecessor, the IMU04. To illustrate the progression in performance, the IMU05 generates one-sixth less noise and is eight-times more accurate than the IMU04. The IMU05-S pushes these boundaries further, offering a tenth less noise and an accuracy 12.5-times that of the IMU04. This level of precision competes with, and often surpasses, several of the more expensive IMUs on the market.

Beyond the standalone capabilities of the IMU05 series, integration with the VBOX 3i data logger further elevates its utility. This combination significantly enhances positional data accuracy. Especially in scenarios where the GNSS signal to the VBOX 3i is compromised, the IMU05 acts as a safeguard, ensuring data accuracy by minimising drift. Its ability to provide body angle data also underscores its importance in vehicle dynamics testing.

Additionally, users will appreciate the IMU05’s rapid initialisation, becoming operational in under a minute.

The IMU05 and IMU05-S represent VBOX Automotive’s commitment to precision and innovation in vehicle dynamics. These tools offer enhanced capabilities for engineers working to enhance vehicle performance and safety. The units provide the reliability and accuracy needed to help engineers make informed decisions, refine processes, and achieve consistent results. In an industry where margins matter, having the right tools can make all the difference.
